Somnatrol Review – 8 Things You Didn’t Know
Somnatrol is a dietary supplement marketed as an alternative to prescription medications for the treatment of sleep disorders, stress reduction and central nervous system (CNS) relaxation. The product promotes natural feelings of drowsiness and is supposed to enhance both sleep duration and quality.
The manufacturer is Sterling Grant, a company committed to developing best-in-class nutraceutical products that will help people live healthier, more active lives.
According to the producer, the supplement alleviates sleeping disturbances in a 2-stage process: stage 1 is a general relaxation stage, whereas in stage 2 the body enters a restful deep sleep stage. Somnatrol also claims to be 100% natural and safe.
It is worth mentioning that the manufacturer brings no evidence (empirical or scientific) towards supporting the claims made.

1) What is Somnatrol?
Somnatrol contains natural herbs, vitamins, hormones, and other amino acids in a trademark combination called Somnazide. Valerian, Chamomile, Passion Flower and Lavander are herbal ingredients traditionally used as remedies for their claming, sedative effects for thousands of years. However many have not been clinically demonstrated to directly treat or alleviate insomnia and other sleep related disorders.
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring amino acid. Various clinical tests has proven it to be effective in treating disorders such as chronic headache, anxiety, depression, obesity, and insomnia. Another key ingredient is melantonin, a hormone which plays an important role in regulating the natural sleep cycle.
The supplement may potentially prove to be effective, however there is no research provided to support the benefit claims. The product has generally received good reviews from consumers.
2) Ingredients of Somnatrol
Somnatrol includes the following ingredients: Vitamin B6, Melatonin, Valerian Root, Lavender, L-Theanine, Serotonin Extract, GABA, Passion Flower, and Chamomile Flower, Gelatin, dicalcium phosphate, magnesium stearate and silica.
3) Is Somnatrol Right for You?
Somnatrol is a mixture of natural herbal extracts, hormones, vitamins and other amino acids that supposedly work together to create natural sleep patterns.
This formula contains 500 mg of Valerian root, a plant that has been shown to have anti-anxiety, calming and tranquilizing properties. The evidence we have is not enough to prove that Valerian is an effective sleep aid but the preliminary results are more than encouraging.
Somnatrol also contains Chamomile, Passion Flower, and Lavender. These plants have a long history of use and are well-known for their calming properties. But just like with Valerian, they have not considered treatments for insomnia, especially for severe forms of insomnia that are not caused by stress or nervousness.
Unlike the ingredients from above, 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), a natural amino acid, has scientifically been proven effective in treating illnesses such as insomnia, fibromyalgia, depression, chronic headache, anxiety, and obesity.
Somnatrol contains a lot of different ingredients, and due to this fact, side effects have not adequately been studied. Valerian root, for instance, was associated with various side effects including heart palpitations, headache, allergic reactions, restlessness, insomnia, and excitability. However, these side effects are likely to occur only if the ingredient is consumed in large quantities.
4) Somnatrol: Pros and Cons
- A mixture of ingredients known to have sedative effects or to play a part in the sleep process
- Mostly positive consumer reviews
5) What You Need to Know Before Taking Somnatrol
- The supplement is not clinically tested
- Potential harmful side effects for different ingredients (which may lead to unpredictable results)
- The FDA did not evaluate the supplement
6) Somnatrol Cost
Each bottle of Somnatrol contains 60 capsules, which should be enough for one month of treatment for the average user. The overall price per capsule is what makes Somnatrol an excellent deal. This is an inexpensive supplement, compared to other similar products.
Somnatrol can be purchased from various online retailers. The shipping costs will depend on your physical location.
7) How to Use Somnatrol
The recommended daily dosage is 2 capsules taken 30-60 minutes before bedtime.
8) Bottom Line – Does It Really Work?
Undoubtedly Somnatrol is a combination of ingredients (herbal, amino-acids and hormones) which have been used, proven or linked to treate various sleep related disorders. Also, consumer reviews are generally positive.
still you should keep in mind that the causes of insomnia and sleep disorders in general are so varied and complex (ranging from stress to chronic conditions) that an effective treatment should probably start by considering (and later treating) each one in particular. Putting together a number of ingredients that might work may not be an effective solution.
Also, some of the ingredients may have harmful side effects, not mentioned by the manufacturer. It is therefore our strong recommendation that a medical investigation for correctly identifying the causes and a general health evaluation of the patient is made prior to starting treatment.
With technology on the rise, there’s little doubt it will soon bleed into the brain supplementation market, and, for some, it already has. But some products are already there.

Common Somnatrol Questions and Answers
- Recent:
Somnatrol includes the following ingredients: Vitamin B6, Melatonin, Valerian Root, Lavender, L-Theanine, Serotonin Extract, GABA, Passion Flower, and Chamomile Flower.
Manufactured by Sterling Grant Labs, Somnatrol is a sleep aid developed in 2001 for those who suffer from insomnia or other sleep disorders. Among the ingredients found in Somnatrol are GABA, Melatonin and L-Theanine, which are all effective in reducing mental and physical agitation. It should be known that while Melatonin can be a beneficial ingredient as a sleep aid, taken on the long term it remains ineffective since the organism gets used to it.
Sterling Grant Laboratories is recommending Somnatrol for mild restless or trouble falling asleep. The formula may not be as effective for insomniacs and consumers with more severe sleeping disorders.
It is also true that many consumers are seeking natural herbal extracts as an alternative to prescription sleeping pills. The manufacturer itself explicitly advises potential consumers to discuss with their doctors before using this product, so we recommend caution as well.
There is no doubt that this combination of compounds will produce sleep in some but each is different, and he requires different concentrations and strengths of the same formula. Finding this balance isn't always a simple task.
