Pure Encapsulations PS 100 Review
PS 100 is a dietary supplement based on the phospholipid with the same name, designed to promote brain function. The formula’s active ingredient, Phosphatidylserine, acts by increasing cellular communication which in turn supports an optimal fluidity of the neuronal membrane.
The product is formulated by Pure Encapsulations which claims to manufacture hypo-allergenic supplements, free of artificial flavors or other preservatives that could interfere with effectiveness of their products. The company has several products involved in clinical trials.
This formula is advertised as containing a standardized extract of Phosphatidylserine, supporting mental performance, cognition and mental acuity (alertness, reaction time).
According to the manufacturer, PS 100 contains 95%-98% of soya-based Phosphatidylserine, which is the highest concentration available. The manufacturer offers some information regarding clinical tests results which reveal the benefits of Phosphatidylserine on memory and cognition.
PS 100 Ingredients
PS 100 contains the following ingredient: Phosphatidylserine 100 mg.
Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid found in all cell membranes. Research so far, although inconclusive, has revealed beneficial effects on reducing the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. However, studies are in their preliminary stages and therefore limited. The Phosphatidylserine initially used was extracted from bovine brain, but due to the danger of disease transmission, a soybeans based extract is now used.
This product also contains hypo-allergenic plant fiber derived from pine cellulose as it is a vegetarian product. Although no side effects are listed by the manufacturer, the formula is not recommended for pregnant and/or lactating women without the consent of a physician.
Furthermore, side effects such as insomnia and stomach upset have been reported for doses over 300mg of Phosphatidylserine based supplements. No unwanted effects have been identified from the formula’s interaction with other medication.
The recommendations of use are 3 capsules per day, with meals, taken as individual doses.
- Vegetarian formula

- Relatively high price – approximately $58 for a 20 day supply (full adult dosage)
- Inconclusive evidence of the products effectiveness
The active ingredient, Phosphatidylserine, has been involved in various clinical trials, with positive results on cognitive, behavioral and memory related parameters. In terms of the benefits on reducing the risk of dementia in elders the results have been classified by the FDA as inconclusive.
However PS 100 has obtained good reviews from consumers regarding its effectiveness in improving memory, boosting energy, reducing cortisol levels, mental fogginess and improving mood.
The formula is not FDA approved, as in case of most nutritional supplements. A healthcare professional should be informed before using such a product.
