Organic Throat Soothers Review
The Organic Throat Soothers formula is promoted as aromatherapy pastilles that may calm sore throats. It is manufactured by St. Claire’s Organics.
St. Claire’s Organics is a producer and distributor of sweets and pastilles from Colorado, in the United States. The company sells only products that have been certified organic by the United States Department of Agriculture. Their formulas do not contain allergens (dairy, soy, casein, gluten, and others) and all their flavors and colors are naturally derived. The company also gives a small part of its revenues to a non-profit organization that tries to preserve indigenous peoples’ herbal knowledge.
According to the producer, Organic Throat Soothers are part of their newest product line which is called Aromatherapy Pastilles. These pastilles are considered functional foods as per St. Claire’s Organics, which are foods with an important nutritional value or foods that help prevent diseases. The formula contains medicinal herbs that help in coughs and sore throats, sugars (the molasses granules which are absorbed more slowly in the blood than refined sugars) and menthol for a cooling effect. The manufacturer does not say who the product is supposed to help. In our view, people who have diabetes should further investigate if they are allowed to take these pastilles.
Organic Throat Soothers Ingredients
Organic Throat Soothers contains the following ingredients: Slippery elm powder, Echinacea extract, licorice root powder, eucalyptus essential oil, usnea extract, osha extract, myrrh powder, organic capsicum extract, molasses granules, and menthol.
Organic Throat Soothers are mint tasting pastilles that contain herbs such as slippery elm and Echinacea which are generally recommended for treating coughs, sore throats, and boosting the immune system. Slippery elm is an herb that has been only scarcely researched by scientists nonetheless herbalists usually recommend it for coughs, sore throat, skin conditions, and stomach and intestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastric re-flux and diarrhea. Laboratory studies have shown it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and in addition it is rich in a substance called mucilage, hence its soothing effect on the digestive tract when taken orally.
Some specialists believe that slippery elm might cause miscarriage. Another side effect of the herb is that, due to the fact that it can coat the digestive tract, it may interfere with the absorption of other drugs and herbs. This poses some questions as to whether slippery elm might decrease the effectiveness of the other ingredients in the formulation promoted by St. Claire’s Organics.
While the formulation is recommended for soothing sore throats, the producer states that Organic Throat Soothers is not intended to prevent or cure medical conditions. All the products that do not require FDA approval but can be marketed are required to have this mentioned on their label. St. Claire’s Organics does not list side effects on its site. The formula is sold in tins of 1.38 oz ($2.7/oz or $3.8/tin if you buy from the manufacturer) and in 8 oz bulk bags ($1.9/oz from the manufacturer). One serving consists of one pastille.
- The price for a tin ranges from around $3 (if you buy a 6-pack from online retailers) to $4.25, which would recommend it as an inexpensive product
- It can be ordered from many online retailers
- Shipping charges are affordable
- Some herbs may interact with other drugs (like Echinacea with medication that suppresses the immune system)
- We have not found online consumer reviews
- The safety and effectiveness of the pastilles have not been checked by the FDA
Organic Throat Soothers is advertised as being able to sooth sore throats. If we look at its list of ingredients, the formula may be effective as it contains herb extracts and essential oils that have been used for a long time in fold medicine for the treatment of symptoms of cold.
However, we have not found online consumer reviews in spite of the fact that the product seems to be available on a relatively large number of websites. Therefore we do not know whether customers were indeed satisfied with the product.
Since they are sold at an affordable price, we believe that the Organic Throat Soothers pastilles may be worth trying.
