Facts

1) Damiana Leaf Quick Facts

Damiana Leaf contains a liquid extract from the leaves of Damiana plant, or Tumera diffusa var. aphrodisiaca.Damiana is considered to have powerful aphrodisiac properties, and has been used to treat infertility, low sex drive, frigidity, and certain hormonal imbalances (menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes or night sweats) for thousands of years. Other important benefits derive from its nerve tonic effects. Damiana has been recommended against stress symptoms, anxiety disorders including obsessive compulsive disorder and panic attacks, paranoia, hypochondria, mood disorders including mild to moderate depression and others.

Not much research has been published on the plant and hence its safety has not been scientifically validated. There is concern that it might negatively affect the development of unborn children and breastfed babies, as well as cause complications to patients suffering from Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Side effects usually occur if large quantities are consumed and include headaches, liver damage and insomnia.

Bottom Line

7) Our Bottom Line

Herbal remedies are often a viable alternative to the traditional drugs, especially because they have fewer side effects and often are not as expensive. However, herbal remedies should always be discussed with a physician, since there may be real dangers and interactions associated to their use. In the case of Damiana Leaf, not much research has been conducted on the core active ingredient, Damiana. The plant has however a long successful historical use, which makes it a popular, reliable herbal remedy. Consumers generally support the supplement’s effectiveness and claim the formula works to deliver the advertised benefits.

Damiana extract has a moderate effect in helping reduce stress, anxiety, and constant irritability, feelings I experience a lot. It came with unpleasant withdrawal feelings though, making my symptoms twice as worse after I stopped taking it.
