BioSom is promoted as an easy-to-use form of DHEA advertised as beneficial on multiple levels for the overall health. The formula is created and marketed by Metagenics, a company specialized in creating formulations that aim to treat chronic conditions. The manufacturer offers various therapeutic lifestyle change (TLC) programs that have allegedly helped thousands of people in reducing symptoms of common chronic illnesses (high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity or heart disease).

This product is based on the endogenous steroid hormone Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), naturally produced by the adrenal glands, brain, and gonads. The formulation is advertised to be beneficial in promoting healthy DHEA and DHEA sulfate levels for normal adrenal function, in promoting healthy sexual function (by modulating metabolism of androgens), mood, bone mass and immune function, and generally supporting the general well-being of its consumers. The supplement features 3 active compounds: two herbal extracts: Stevia Leaf Extract (Stevia rebaudiana) and Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citricidal), and DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone). The formula may help alleviate depression symptoms which may be liked to low DHEA levels (particularly in people over the age of 40).

The liquid form of this product makes it particularly useful for individuals who have difficulty in swallowing capsules or tablets. BioSom is designed only for the use of adults over 18 years old. Special precautions should be taken by people who are already under medication or suffer from particular health conditions indicated by the manufacturer on the official web-page.

Facts

1) BioSom Quick Facts

BioSom ingredients include 2 herbal extracts and the steroid hormone DHEA.
DHEA hormone is the most abundant circulating steroid in humans. Its main functions are in mediating metabolic processes and in the synthesis of the male and female sex steroids (androgen and estrogen). The compound has also been research in the treatment of memory impairment, female fertility, lupus, and cardiovascular disease. DHEA supplement have also been used to enhance immunity and reverse some of the aging effects or increase strength (muscle mass). Studies have failed to support any of the health benefits mentioned above. Although these studies did not reveal any dangerous adverse reactions, the long-term side effects for the use of DHEA supplements are unknown. Mild side effects include headaches, insomnia, fatigue, mood changes. Physical changes may also occur in both men (more breast tissue) and women (facial hair, deeper voice). Some research suggest that this type of supplementation my increase the risk of certain cancers affected by hormones and interact with other medication (blood thinners, medication for liver, heart or diabetes and hormone based therapeutic drugs).

Stevia Leaf Extract (Stevia rebaudiana) is a plant used particularly for its sweet taste in the food industry. The medical uses of this plant are in weight loss, diabetes, and high blood pressure treatments, preventing pregnancy. Studies have not managed to reach a common ground regarding the effectiveness of this plant in any of the health claims. More evidence is needed in order to recommend this extract as an alternative treatment for such conditions. Common side effects experienced by consumers are bloating, dizziness, numbness, and muscle pain. Those with known allergies to ragweed plants should also be aware of such a reaction when taking a stevia-based supplement.

BioSom side effects consist of acne, hair loss, aggressiveness, irritability, and increased levels of estrogen. More serious side effects like rapid heart-beat, blurred vision, and dizziness require the immediate attention of a healthcare specialist.

What’s Inside?

2) What’s Inside BioSom?

BioSom contains the following ingredients: Stevia Leaf Extract (Stevia rebaudiana), Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citricidal), DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone), purified water, castor oil, Polysorbate 60, natural flavors, Benzyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Stearate, Potassium Sorbate (as preservative), lecithin (soy), xanthan gum, and disodium EDTA (preservative)

BioSom ingredients are combined in a mixture of a hormone and two botanical extracts. According to the manufacturer, DHEA (also known as the anti-aging hormone) can regulate essential hormones that the body produces in a natural matter and plays a vital role in increasing lean muscle mass, burning fat, and stimulating bone growth. Important functions of the chemical revolve around mood regulation and ensuring the well-being of the consumer.

Stevia Leaf Extract (Stevia rebaudiana), is an incredibly sweet, low-calorie dietary supplement that has been used for more than 1.000 years by the Gurani Indians of Paraguay. The herb is currently utilized in some South American countries to assist diabetics and the hypoglycemic. DHEA is a substance that is produced by the body in abundant supplies during youth, reaching a peak around age twenty-five. Low levels of DHEA are usually caused by stress and some clinicians monitor DHEA levels to track long-term stress. DHEA levels are also reduced by alcohol and caffeine (from coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate, candy, medications, etc.) consumption.

Bosom side effects may occur if the recommended daily dose is exceeded. The list of possible side effects includes hair loss, irritability, increased estrogen levels and facial hair in women.

Verdict

8) Our Final Take On BioSom

BioSom formula is a nutritional supplement offered for the improvement of the overall health, with particular advertised benefits on the adrenal and sexual functions. The product is not indicated for people suffering from heart disease, prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, low “good” cholesterol, or individuals who are already under medication without first consulting a physician. The manufacturer also warns against the use of this formula by pregnant and nursing women. The recommended dose should not be exceeded because of a potential risk of serious adverse health effects. A bottle contains approximately 85 servings (sufficient for a month’s supply at a moderate dose of 3 servings/day).

The formulation may however cause unwanted effects even when the suggested dose is complied with. These reactions derive from those of the active substances and should be taken seriously by those who experience any of the listed symptoms. The best approach when using unapproved dietary supplements is asking a specialized advice prior starting its administration.

I trust Metagenics products, having already used BeneSom and a couple of other formulas. This BioSom formula I take to enhance my lately rather depressed mood, and I find that it is easy to use, and effective at the same time. I am easily able to find a sense of calmness and well-being and it’s something I owe to this formula

I was recommended this for my adrenal fatigue. And while it is fairly easy to use and rather heap, I really cannot say how much it works. I have been using this for several weeks now, and I do feel some positive improvement but not as much as I would have expected. I will keep you posted on the results!
