3) Is Vitamin E and Selenium Right for You?

Vitamin E and Selenium is a product based on a vitamin and mineral formulation.

Vitamin E is the generic name for a group of fat-soluble substances believed to protect the body against free radicals. The benefits of these substances have been widely researched and praised, as they are thought to be involved directly or indirectly in important processes including anti-aging.

Food sources of this nutrient are nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. The substance is also used to prevent skin aging and specific skin problems (wrinkles, scars, brown spots), to hydrate dry and cracked cuticles, boost immune function, prevent circulatory disease, reduce cholesterol, and restore hormonal balance. Studies support the nutrient’s benefits in reducing the risk of heart disease. More research is needed to prove benefits in preventing different types of cancers or cataract. Doses higher than 400 IU/day may lead to serious side effects–and even death. Patients suffering from heart disease or diabetes should take special precautions with supplements containing this nutrient.

Selenium is a mineral naturally found in the soil and some foods (oats, poultry, whole grains, brown rice, and Brazilian nuts) and is also needed in small amounts by the body. There are many advertised benefits for this substance, the most important being its ability to fight cancers, protect the heart, boost the immune system, regulate thyroid activity, fight free radicals, and reduce inflammations (in combination with vitamin E). This nutrient is considered to be most likely safe, but higher doses may cause nausea, irritability, nail changes, and low energy. Intoxication is similar to arsenic poisoning with symptoms such as hair loss, nail inflammation, metallic taste, and garlic breath odor. Selenium combined with vitamin E is known to result in a very powerful formula in the fight against free radicals.
