TwinLab DMAE is a dietary supplement in the form of concentrated capsules containing DMAE or dimethylethanolamine. TwinLab was established in 1968, and entered the market with a liquid protein supplement. Later, the range of product expanded, and today the company markets over 1,000 products consisting of vitamins, minerals, herbs and teas.
TwinLab DMAE is an organic compound used to treat a number of conditions affecting the central nervous system and the brain. Research has demonstrated that it works by increasing production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which plays an important role in muscle activation, enhancement of sensory perceptions (when waking up) and sustaining attention.
It is mostly used as a memory and mood enhancer and is thought to improve intellectual functions. However, no clinical studies back-up its use for these purposes and its connection to choline and its role as a biochemical precursor to acetylcholine have been the subject of many disputes.
TwinLab DMAE Ingredients
TwinLab DMAE includes the following ingredients: DMAE, potato starch, gelatine, cellulose, magnesium stearate, medium chain triglycerides, and silica.
DMAE is the core ingredient in this formulation. Double-blind clinical trials have shown significant improvement of learning abilities for children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or some other form of learning disability.
Due to the fact that DMAE may increase the levels of acetylcholine (though no there is no conclusive evidence), several studies have been conducted to determine its effect on people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, Tardive Dyskinesia or Huntington’s Chorea. However, results were mixed and therefore inconclusive (some tests revealed it is no more effective than placebo).
As TwinLab DMAE side effects, some consumers have been experiencing: drowsiness, elevated blood pressure, weight loss, insomnia. Some manufacturers warn against the use of DMAE by people with epilepsy or a history of convulsions. The recommended dose is one capsule daily as recommended by the healthcare professional.
