Restoril is a form of prescription medication based on the active substance temazepam, a chemical which belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. The chemical acts as an enhancer of the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, a neurotransmitter of crucial importance in the brain. Low levels of GABA have been linked to feelings of anxiety, insecurity, unexplained panic and even depression.Temazepam was approved by the FDA in February 1981.
Controlled clinical studies showed the drug is effective in decreasing the number of nightly awakenings, good tolerance of the drug and mild and transient side effects. Adverse reactions include: drowsiness, headaches, fatigue, nervousness, lethargy, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, weakness, restlessness. Other potential side effects: feelings of depression, loss of orientation and sleep disturbances.
