The formula is recommended to adults. However, pregnant and nursing women, those under the age of 12 and people who have a medical condition are advised to consult a doctor before taking the supplement. Nutrilite Omega Complex is also suited for vegetarians.
Nutrilite Omega Complex Ingredients
Nutrilite Omega Complex formula contains the following ingredients: DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid – from Algal oil, Schizochytrium sp. – 150 mg), ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid – from flaxseed oil – 150 mg), Tapioca Starch, Glycerin, Carrageenan, Disodium Phosphate, Sunflower Oil, Peppermint Oil, Rosemary Extract, Soy Lecithin.
Nutrilite Omega Complex is a combination of two essential Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and ALA. Omega – 3 fatty acids have been the topic of many research studies during the past years. Their health benefits span from diabetes to various forms of cancer to Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), heart diseases or macular degeneration.
DHA is found in high concentrations in the retina and the brain, accounting for up to 97% of the overall Omega-3 fats in the brain and up to 93% of the overall Omega-3 fats in the retina. Strong scientific evidence has shown Omega 3 DHA is essential to brain development (both pre and postnatal) and brain health, to cognitive function and neuroprotection and even in regulation mood and alleviating depression (although insufficient evidence exists in this regard).
ALA is most known for its role in cardiovascular health. Certain studies pointed out that adequate dietary consumption of ALA may help reduce heart attack risk and inflammation associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. All Omega-3 fatty acids have to be taken from food, and cannot be produced by the body. EPA and DHA can, however, be made from ALA, so it is of utmost importance to ensure proper amounts of ALA. Although a daily dosage is not generally agreed upon, most doctors recommend adult men taking 160 mg of DHA/ EPA daily and 130 mg of ALA. Adult women should take 90 mg of EPA/DHA and 80 mg of ALA daily.
Although rare, side effects of ALA and DHA include gastrointestinal disturbances, increased risk of bleeding or flu-like symptoms.
The manufacturer recommends taking 1 tablet (150 mg DHA and 150 mg ALA) a day. Reviews of the product are hard to find. However, most of them report Nutrilite Omega Complex being a high quality, effective product.
- The product contains no fish or fish derivatives;
- The formula is certified halal and suitable for vegetarians.
- Lack of consumer testimonials to assess the formula’s effectiveness;
- The precise daily values for Omega-3 DHA and ALA are not clearly established.
Nutrilite Omega Complex is one of the many dietary supplements which advocate the health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids. Particularly, the formulation offered by Amway is advertised as being beneficial for brain and heart health. Unfortunately, consumer testimonials are scarce, and we cannot list the full spectrum of benefits and potential side effects experienced by the consumers. We may, however, assume that the formula will work since Omega-3 fatty acids have been researched extensively over the course of the past ten years.
Precautions, however, exist when using Omega 3, as well as some side effects which can be experienced by a part of the consumers. We recommend caution, as always, and if possible to seek the opinion of a healthcare provider before use.
