Lutein contains the following ingredients: Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Soybean oil, beeswax and mixed tocopherols, softgel consists of gelatin, glycerin and water.
Each capsule has 20 mg lutein and 1 mg zeaxanthin, both extracted from marigold flower petals. Both are antioxidants found in various plants, foods, and the human eye. In the latter, it’s specifically the lens, retina, and macula. It’s thought that they protect your eyes from harmful light waves and certain types of eye diseases like cataracts. Several studies point to the effectiveness of lutein and zeaxanthin, especially with a balance of vitamins and minerals, in maintaining healthy vision. There isn’t an official recommended daily allowance (RDA) for lutein or zeaxanthin. The American Optometric Association recommends a serving of 2 mg a day for zeaxanthin, and 10 mg a day for lutein. Most studies have used doses of 10 to 20 mg of each ingredient without ill effects. Mostly these nutrients are studied in relation to treatment or prevention in diseases like cataracts and age related macular degeneration (AMD).
