Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils is advertised as a vegan alternative to fish oils which provides the beneficial fatty acids Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9. The formula manufactured by Essential Formulas Incorporated (EFI) is claimed to have numerous health benefits, including: maintaining a healthy cell membrane function, supporting immune system response, promoting optimal nervous system function, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and helping build hormones.

According to the manufacturer, Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils uses eight high quality oils from non-genetically modified (or non-GMO) plants and seeds. The oils are cold-pressed, preserving the complete nutrient value of the ingredients.

Essential Formulas Incorporated (EFI) is a U.S. based company established in 2000. Initially, the formula was set up to bring Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics to the United States, a formula developed by Dr. Iichiroh Ohhira, a leading microbiologist from Japan. Today, the company offers various other formulas developed by Dr. Ohhira including an immune system support formula (Propolis PLUS), a line of probiotic skin care products and the Essential Living Oils.

Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils Ingredients

Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils includes the following ingredients: a-Linolenic Acid (ALA), Linoleic Acid, Oleic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Caprylic Acid, Vaccenic Acid, Capric Acid, and Gadoleic Acid.

Product Features

Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils is a blend of Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids from vegetarian sources including rice bran oil, sunflower seed oil, flax seed oil, olive oil, Japanese tea, oil, avocado oil, Perilla seed oil and borage seed oil.

The Perilla seed oil and flaxseed oil are two of the richest vegetable sources of Omega-3. Both contain high levels of Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the three Omega-3 essential fatty acids available. Although scientists say that EPA and DHA have better established health benefits, Alpha-linolenic acid is extremely important because it partially metabolizes in EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). ALA has powerful antioxidant properties, comparable to those of Vitamin C, E and Coenzyme Q10. One of the distinct features of ALA as compared to other antioxidants is that it has the ability to neutralize free radicals within both lipid and aqueous regions of the cells, making it a highly effective molecule.

Clinical trials and scientific research revealed ALA having beneficial properties in preventing or treating ailments such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s disease. One study conducted by German researchers, in which ALA was administered to nine Alzheimer’s patients for a year concluded that the patients showed a stabilization of the cognitive functions such as memory, recall and learning abilities. ALA has been extensively used in Germany as a treatment against diabetic neuropathy and its complications.

Adults are recommended taking 1-3 capsules with each meal. There is a very limited number of product reviews for Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils, with consumers claiming that the product is great for vegetarians, but no decisive arguments towards the formula’s effectiveness. No Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils side effects or precautions are mentioned by the manufacturer.

Conclusion

Dr. Ohhira’s Essential Living Oils is mainly based on Omega-3, 6 and 9, which are important are fatty acids involved in numerous body functions. They have to be obtained from diet or supplementation most of the time, as some are not at all manufactured by the body. Alpha-Lipoic Acid is often referred to as the “ultimate antioxidant,” because of its unique abilities to neutralize multiple types of free radicals, in both water and fat, intracellular and extracellular environments. Additionally ALA has been proven to increase the availability of other natural antioxidants such as vitamin C and E. Although numerous research and clinical trials exist confirming its benefits, its effectiveness needs to be confirmed by large scale human trials.
